Cannabis Genetic Nomenclature

use this is a reference, but its meant to be revised and updated

A x B

A = Mother

B = Pollen Donor (always listed second)

S1 = Self 1, Reversing a female to produce xx pollen, and using said pollen on same female.

IX (ix) = Inbred or Intercross, often a feminized ‘F2’ involving two different phenotypes so as not to be confused with S1.

IBL = Inbred Line. IBLs are achieved thru selection to exhibit specific traits of genetic lineages. Selections occur thru line breeding (f2-f6+) or thru a series of backcrosses.

F1 = 1st Filial Generation. Used as a term in most hybrids, although true f1 hybrids require two genetically distinct parents.

P1 x P2 = F1. F1 x F1 = F2.

bx or bc = backcross. Taking the closest genetic child from an outcross and pollinating the parent.

often breeders use this term for the parent as opposed to the outcross so Triangle Kush x (Triangle Kush x Afghani) = Triangle Kush bc1.

rbx = reversed, backcross as in reversing a female and using pollen on parent (ideally genetically closest to pollen donor).

TK/Afghani = TK x Afghani. This nomenclature is often used instead of names in more genetically diverse hybrids to avoid ‘x’ confusion as in:

TK/Afghani x TK/Afghani instead of TK x Afghani x TK x Afghani

Genealogy for Cannabis

Finding accurate information about cannabis genetics can be quite a tough thing, even in the age of the internet!

For many folks a simple google search will yield many, often conflicting answers. I find people tend to believe the more popular answers, and more frequently than not those results aren’t true.

For most genetic information there’s one awesome resource that people all over the globe use: www.seedfinder.eu

This site is vetted pretty well, and although can require some learning how to navigate it the information provided on here is second to none when it comes to breaking down cannabis genome. Breeders often have their own category which can make tracking down info easier, and even the more heirloom and unknown varieties have a spot on here.

*There can many of one strain listed so doing diligent research into breeders is still necessary.*

One trick is to use ‘seedfinder’ in the google search with the strain name!

How to avoid White Labelled gear

White labelling, by definition is “.. when the manufacturer of an item uses the branding requested by the purchaser, or marketer, instead of its own. The end product appears as though it has been produced by the purchaser.”

Unfortunately the seed market is rife with this type of business. So how does one identify a suspected ‘White Labeller’?

Here are some tips to avoid white labellers:

  • One of the biggest tells of a white label producer/seller is their collection. These types of sellers tend to offer the most sought-after and well known varieties often cheap and widely available. This can include heirloom varieties, landrace varieties, popular strains with mysterious or less than known lineages/breeders (i.e. Blue Dream, Gorilla Glue, Green Crack, Chemdog, Sour Diesel, Durban Poison, Girl Scout Cookies,  Runtz, Gelato, etc.)

  • No mention of breeder. Often, while providing the tastiest, most juiciest options for buyers, these companies don’t mention who actually bred or produced these seeds. Furthermore, for folks who have ordered from these scrupulous dealers will find none of it comes in original breeder packaging.

  • Popular breed as an auto variety. YES its entirely possible, in fact there are some great breeders who have worked to accomplish exactly this, but on average if your favorite strain didn’t start as an auto, chances of it being available as an auto are very slim.

  • Get to know your breeder. Both small and large, your support is huge to breeders (and sellers). Get to know these people’s work and operations, the cuts they hold (where they got them), who they support, and how they run their business. If your seller or breeder cant answer these types of questions, they might not be the best one for you.

Hopefully this helps some people make the best decisions when it comes to finding legitimate gear. Unfortunately many popular sites and companies engage in this type of activity. Any other questions or tips in this matter feel free to reach out or leave a comment!

How to Germinate Seeds with Ease

Preface: *Sprouting cannabis seeds is illegal in many countries/states. Please follow local guidelines on germination of cannabis seeds. Seeds of Love LLC accepts no responsibility for any parties who do not follow local/federal guidelines. All seeds sold for Novelty purpose only.*

Seed sprouting can be difficult for folks who don’t have a ton of experience germinating, and at the cost of good genetics its worth doing some research. I’ve began compiling the germination techniques from all our breeders to give folks an idea of what might work best for them. Here’s some tips from the professionals on germinating seeds:

Rocky Mountain High 719:

“My usual method is pretty simple. Coco and tap water. i put the coco in the seed trays… compact it lightly. Then water until the water drains. Then i poke a hole with a toothpick about 1/4” deep. I also try to make sure I plant the seed with the caldera side up.. pointy side of the seed down. The seeds tend to grow upside down otherwise.. I dig up every seed after 3 days if i haven’t seen anything coming up, and i usually find them upside down or just not racked yet. Then after this, I just keep the coco moist, but not soggy. I’d actually rather go a little dry than too wet. This has been my method for 20 years. No soak. No magic voodoo juice. No Paper towel (unless i’m testing the germination rate on seeds) … Just good old plant and water. I’ve popped 15+ year old seeds this method with no issues. Don’t over complicate it. Don’t overthink it. They are seeds.”

Maryland Masher (Manifest Destiny Seed Co.):

Float-tek germination method:

Properly floating cannabis seeds to germinate them is as easy as placing the seeds in room temp filtered water (tap water works as well, in a perfect world the optimal pH would around ~7) in a container that is covered from direct light. I use a kitchen cupboard but anything similar would suffice. When the tap root is about ¼ to ½ inch in length, the cannabis seeds are ready to be placed into their growing medium. I personally use a coco coir/ perlite mixture when running an indoor cycle, outdoors I prefer a basic living soil mix. This method is by far the easiest, and most effective method for cannabis seed germination I have found and has been my sole germination method for the past decade. Just don’t disturb the seeds and don’t let them sink. They will float the whole duration of the process.

Strayfox Gardenz:

I always get a ton of questions on how to germinate seeds. Especially old seeds.
.
Everyone has their own way. Depending how the seeds were stored, the fridge is an excellent place to store, or for a cold snap.
.
From germinating, cloning, veg, flower or seed production.. I try and make it as easy as possible. Heres a few steps that has really worked out great for me.
.
IMO, A fullmoon is an awesome time to crack open seeds. The way I look at it. If a moon can move an oceans tide, it can definitely tie into germinating seeds as well 🌑🌱💚💫
.
🌱1..I always lightly scuff the seams to older special seeds with a book of matches on the grit strip side, then soak in regular tap water for 24-48 hours. Yes Tap water. Imo, Tap water works amazing for germinating seeds due to the chlorine and the minerals that are in city or well water…. (If they sink or crack open on a soak, it’s usually party time. If not, I gently crack them open with my teeth.. kinda like a sunflower seed). .

🌱2.. Once they sink to the bottom of the cup, I put a few drops of peroxide in there to clean and oxygenate the tap root. Sometimes the peroxide will make your seeds float.. Totally cool.. Let sit for another 12-24 hours then rinse seeds in a fresh cup of water..Just my thing..

🌱3..From there I put them into a damp paper towel, then stick them into a Ziploc bag full of air.
🌱4… Let them sit for at least 2-3 days for the tap root to reach, before you stick them into soil…
🌱5..DO NOT BURY THE SEED…JUST BURY THE TAP ROOT SO THE SEED IS ABOVE SOIL.Then use spray bottle to dampen soil.. .

Step 3-4 is crucial..When they sit in the the paper towel..The tap root grows tiny little microscopic hairs that become very effective when placed into soil.. 🙏🛰️🌱 This process usually takes up to a week. ⚠️Fyi, try this method on some old bs seeds. Don’t try it on your brand new 1k auction pack and say Stray said this works. lol.. This method works for me. Hope this helps..
Thanks
Stray🙏🏽💚

Pheno Addicts

R.I.T.Z Germ Guide

You will need:

Bottle of purified drinking water

shot glass

hydrogen peroxide

seeds

Step 1. Fill shot glass with purified water and add 10-15 drops of hydrogen peroxide.

Step 2. Place beans in shot glass and soak for 48-72 hours until tap root pops out. Some beans are stubborn and might need more time or even cracking them if shells are hard. please avoid paper towels no need for those.

Step 3. Carefully plant your beans in plugs. I use root riot plugs. As soon as you plant them place them under humidity dome.

Note: It is very important not to overwater the plug. You actually don’t need to moisten them, they have enough mouisture out of the bag to get the beans going. Once the heads pop out of the plug they can have a drink.
